Family help

How can I help a parent with a computer without taking over?

Start with what they want to do. Agree on one problem, explain the next step, and let them choose how much help they want. Solving the issue should not require taking control of everything else.

Ask for the goal, not the diagnosis.

Try, “What were you trying to do when it stopped working?” That question is often easier to answer than asking for technical details. Do not assume the same issue happened again just because it sounds familiar.

Work on one thing.

Agree on a small goal, such as opening a document or reconnecting a printer. Save unrelated tidying and software changes for another conversation.

Make the choice visible.

Before changing a setting, explain what it does and ask permission. Invite the person to click or type when they prefer to. Reading an explanation twice is not a problem to rush past.

Respect private information.

Helping with a printer does not require reading email or opening private files. Let the person close anything they do not want to share. Paying for support is not permission to view their computer.

Leave a small note.

Write down what happened, what changed, and how to recognize the same problem. Use their words where possible. A short note can be more useful than a long lecture about how computers work.

Know when another helper is better.

When the problem is outside your confidence or the conversation is becoming stressful, pause. Use an established professional or a useful written guide rather than trying increasingly risky changes.

If someone else will connect to the computer remotely, read our questions to ask before remote support first.
